The Ghost Slips Away is a plaster cast from an altered book. Hentges finds books from thrift stores that are unwanted or unusable and carefully removes pages to create symmetrical patterns. Then, she casts plaster into the books.. The resulting sculpture is removed from the original text and only small fragments of pages remain in the plaster.
Hentges performs a quasi-archaeological investigation by cutting into the book and she is fascinated with the curious object that results. The sculptures are also a curiosity to viewers who can not determine their origin.
The title, The Ghost Slips Away, refers to the book’s story that slowly slips away as the sculpture is created. Hentges is drawn to the ephemeral nature of life and its tenuous quality.
